Welcome + What We Do on the Iron Range

Welcome to Benson Automation and Electric

If you’re in the Virginia, MN / Iron Range area and you’ve ever thought, “I should probably get that looked at,” this blog is for you.

I’m Wyatt Benson—owner and master electrician at Benson Automation and Electric. I run a local, small business focused on doing electrical work the right way: clear communication, clean installs, code-compliant results, and a job site you don’t have to clean up after.

This is our first blog post, so I’ll keep it simple: who we are, what we do, and how to know when it’s time to call an electrician.

What we do and who we serve:

We provide residential and small commercial electrical services within about a 40-mile radius of Virginia, MN.

Here are a few of the most common projects we handle:

  • Lighting fixture installs and upgrades

  • Switch, outlet, and dimmer repair/installation

  • New electrical circuits for appliances, garages, workshops, and additions

  • Electrical panel upgrades (100-amp and 200-amp)

  • Troubleshooting: flickering/dimming lights, tripping breakers, dead outlets

  • GFCI outlet issues (especially kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoors)

  • Code compliance fixes and safety improvements

  • Smart home installs and select automation work

If you’re a homeowner, cabin owner, or a local retail business—this is the kind of work we do every week.

A quick note on safety and why “just Google it” can get expensive:

There are plenty of DIY projects that are totally reasonable. Electrical work is tricky because problems can hide behind walls, show up intermittently, or be caused by something you can’t see—like a loose neutral, an overloaded circuit, or a failing breaker.

The result is that a “small” issue can turn into:

  • Repeated breaker trips

  • Melted wiring or damaged devices

  • Lost power to part of the home

  • A safety hazard for your family

If something feels off, it’s worth getting a professional set of eyes on it.

7 signs it’s time to call an electrician:

If you’re seeing any of these, it’s a good idea to reach out:

  1. Breakers trip repeatedly (especially on the same circuit)

  2. Lights flicker or dim when appliances turn on

  3. Outlets are warm, buzzing, or discolored

  4. You smell burning plastic near a switch/outlet/panel

  5. You have frequent GFCI trips and resets don’t hold

  6. You’re using extension cords as “permanent wiring”

  7. Your panel is outdated or you’re adding big electrical loads (EV charger, hot tub, shop equipment)

Even if it’s not an emergency, these are the kinds of issues that can be fixed before they become a bigger problem.

Our approach: clean work, clear options, no pressure:

When you contact Benson Automation and Electric, you can expect:

  • Straight answers and clear explanations

  • Options when there’s more than one way to solve a problem

  • Code-compliant work from a licensed master electrician

  • A 12-month warranty on electrical work

We also offer financing for larger projects, so you can tackle the work you need without putting everything on hold.

Emergency electrical service (when it can’t wait):

Electrical emergencies happen—especially during cold snaps, storms, or when equipment finally gives up.

We offer 24/7 emergency electrical service, and our typical response time is around 2 hours depending on location and call volume.

If you’re dealing with a partial outage, burning smell, sparking, or a panel issue, don’t wait.
